Book Trust

How our Foundation helped get kids passionate about reading.

Book Trust empowers kids from low-income families to choose and buy their own books. Every month through the school year, students select two to three new books and get to keep them and take them home, creating home libraries to be shared with siblings and giving every child the opportunity to fall in love with reading.

During the 2014/15 school year alone, Book Trust empowered more than 35,000 students from low income families in 15 states to choose and own more than 820,000 new books. More than 1,600 teachers accrued almost 20 million Scholastic Bonus Points thanks to Book Trust, and that enabled them to purchase additional books and resources. And since the program’s inception in 2001, students have become the proud owners of almost 4.3 million books.

In the 2014/15 school year, BuildStrong Education Foundation gave $30,000 to support 5,198 participating students in 14 Montbello and Green Valley Ranch elementary schools in Denver. That helped students become the owners of 125,588 books and helped our teachers earn over 3.1 million Bonus Points from Scholastic.

As one grateful Book Trust student said, “Every time the book order comes in a series of cheers erupts from everyone, including me. As soon as I get my book I burrow into it, loving every word. When I’m done, my little sister will read it after me, so not only I enjoy it. Thank you for spreading the joy of reading.”
