Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School Revitalization Project

In 2004, the Foundation helped lead this effort in partnership with parents, community leaders, students, and DPS representatives. We worked collaboratively for the development of a comprehensive revitalization plan to fundamentally transform a low performing middle school into a 6-12 grade early college high school that will begin adding high school students beginning in 2006. As part of the transformation the school was renamed, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Early College.

Today, the school is home to 1,116 students in grades 6 – 12. The school is a three time recipient of the Colorado Department of Education’s “Center of Excellence Award.” Since its first graduating class in 2010, the Early College has celebrated four consecutive years of a 100% graduation rate all with post-secondary plans. In April 2017, the school received its official designation as an Early College from the Colorado Department of Education. This designation will allow students to deepen their concurrent enrollment in college coursework and graduate from MLKEC with an AA Degree, at no cost to them.
